Safe Cosmetics Resources

Here are some resources to help you navigate the confusing world of personal care and cosmetic safety:

Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep App and Website: You can search by product, brand or ingredient. Each product (and ingredient) is scored on a toxicity scale of 0-10 with 0 being the best (lowest hazard).  The iPhone app has a bar code scanner that you can use to evaluate products while at the store. Of course, not all products are in the database, but many are. Please note: there is an error in the database that associates the wrong products with the brand name Ferro Cosmetics (this is the brand of mineral makeup we sell). It associates the Glow by J. Lo brand with Ferro and these products have a score of “6”.  We are working with EWG to have this fixed, and as you can see all of the actual Ferro products score “2” or lower. Also all of the Zosimos products we carry score 2 or lower.

Campaign for Safe Cosmetics’ Red List:  The Campaign has put together a very handy list of ingredients to avoid by product type. They have a list for Shampoo, Conditioner, Blush Eye Shadow and Face Powders, Hair Dyes, Sunscreens, Skin Lighteners, and Moisturizers. They also have a list of contaminants to avoid in Lipstick and Fragrances here:

Campaign for Safe Cosmetics “Compact” signers: These were the original companies that signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics from 2008-2011.  The Compact closed in 2011 and the Safe Cosmetics Business Network has taken its place. The Campaign will be sending out more information about the Business Network members soon.

The Story of Cosmetics: This informative video, produced by the makers of the incredible “Story of Stuff” video, gives a lot of background information.
