Dede's Green Scene: Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow! by Dede Tabak, January 15 2014, 0 Comments

One of my favorite holiday songs is Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow! And even though the holidays are over, the song is still the battle cry for the I Am Pro Snow campaign. I Am Pro Snow is a partnership between Warren Miller Entertainment and the Climate Reality Project. The campaign's goal is to raise awareness and educate the masses about the warm realities of climate change before it’s too late.

Earth’s climate is warming up. The average winter temperatures have risen at least 10 degrees over the last 20 years. This means our winters are getting shorter and mountain snow pack is declining. I Am Pro Snow unites those within the winter sports community to be Climate Ambassadors. These professional skiers and winter adventurers use their influence to get fans thinking about how climate change could impact them directly. The Climate Ambassadors are individuals who chase the winter and see the effects firsthand. They use media outlets to spread the I Am Pro Snow campaign.

For more than 63 years, Warren Miller Entertainment has released an annual film that celebrates and documents the world's best skiers and riders in unique and amazing locations. This year, Warren Miller Entertainment released the documentary Ticket to Ridewhich shows the travels of Climate Ambassadors Ted Ligety, Mark Abma, Michelle Parker and Doug Stoup as they travel to Greenland, and witness close up the impacts of climate change. Greenland is located between the Arctic and Atlantic Ocean. It's there that we can see the early warning signs of what’s happening to our planet. Glaciers are melting rapidly – three times as fast as they were 20 years ago-- and snow seasons are becoming shorter and shorter. If we don’t do something soon, we may not have snow.

The I Am Pro Snow campaign wants to make the masses evaluate how their way of life may be impacting snowfalls and winters. We rely heavily on coal and oil that produce carbon emissions, which heat the Earth's atmosphere. We should transition to clean energy such as wind and solar power in order to stop climate change. “We only have one chance," says Michelle Parker. "We don’t have a planet b.” So let’s all be Pro Snow, if not, then the song Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow! may be obsolete.
