Dede's Green Scene: Jessica Alba's Honest Life by Dede Tabak, March 13 2013, 0 Comments

Jessica Alba may have played Sue Storm in the Fantastic Four films, but she’s playing a superhero in real life as well…herself! Inspired by the birth of her two daughters, Alba created the Honest Company. A company which sells eco friendly, toxin-free products, such as diapers, shampoo and cleaning products. Alba's goal is to help other families live an eco friendly life.

Jessica Alba has always been eco-conscious. Her parents taught her the mindset to not to be wasteful, and becoming a mother has only increased her concern and awareness for the environment and her family’s health.

“I would buy what I thought was like an eco-brand and pay out the wazoo for it and then find out that it’s made with the same ingredients as any other brand.,” said Alba to Ecopreneurist.

That's when Alba decided that the only way to get the products that she could trust would be to make them herself. She partnered with author and environmentalist Christopher Gavigan, whose book Healthy Child Healthy World: Creating a Cleaner, Greener, Safer Home, inspired a pregnant Alba to consciously scrutinize the products she purchased for her family.

“Parents get a lot of advice about what to feed their children and how to baby-proof their home,” says Gavigan, “but many are still completely unaware of the toxic risks posed by everyday basics, like diapers, home cleaners, body washes, and laundry soaps. Yet, there’s growing consensus that some chemicals used in these products are linked to chronic diseases like asthma, ADHD, and even cancer.”

The Honest Company provides parents with a subscription-based product service that mails the eco friendly products right to your door, and for a reasonable price. The company has grown and evolved with input from its subscribers, and the products line has expanded to include aromatic soy candles, laundry detergent, dish towels and sunscreen. For every product purchased, the Honest Company donates money to Baby 2 Baby, a non-profit that helps children and families in need.

Alba has also taken her beliefs to the national level. She recently worked to gain support for the Safe Chemicals Act, which would require products to be tested for chemicals before they are sold. It would also have the U.S Environmental Protection Agency test products already on the market. It should be no surprise that in 2012, Alba was honored at the Environmental Media Awards with the Green Parent Award!

Jessica Alba is taking it a step further and sharing her personal journey in her new book The Honest Life: Living Naturally and True to You. It shares how her two daughters, Hope and Haven, inspired her to create the Honest Company. It also includes great tips on how to live an eco friendly life, with recipes for a clean diet, eco-beauty, style and décor. The Honest Life is currently in book stores nationwide.
